16 AWESOME Real Food Superbowl Sunday Snacks

It’s  almost Superbowl Sunday! You know what that means, right? Pizza and sliders and chips n’ dip galore! But, I’ve come up with an awesome list to help you navigate Sunday, so you can nosh with your family and friends AND crush your New Year’s Resolutions to boot! There are two sections below – “Make It” and “Buy It”. There’s no science to this. The “Make It” section is full of easy, tasty, nutrient dense recipes that will knock your guests’ socks off. The “Buy It” section, is for those of you who get like me on Sunday (I’m the “Uuuuum it’s Sunday…I’m not lifting a finger” type) and would rather just grab it from the store so you can max and relax.

1 – Macho Nachos by Purple Beet Nutrition

Tips: Soak your own beans (learn how here) to get rid of the gas inducing phytic acid or pick up Eden Organics pre-soaked beans (easy to find at most grocery stores). Also, Food For Life makes some killer sprouted corn tortillas (I find them at Whole Foods usually)!

2 – Guacamole Deviled Eggs by West Coast Primal

Tips: Make these by steaming (as instructed in this recipe) or, if you don’t have the equipment used here, boil them. Ina Garten, who’s recipe you can get here, taught me how to make the perfect hard boiled eggs. Her fool proof method works everytime.  I’m not kidding. Even my hubs has got it down. Also, if you prefer to keep the recipe veg friendly, swap the topped bacon for a sprinkle of your favorite nut or even crunchy seaweed!

3 – Chiles Rellenos by Code to Wellness

Tips: Prepare the filling and the fire roasted poblanos the day before. That way, the day of, you’re basically just rollin’ easy peasy burritos! These would taste great with a bean filling (see nacho recipe for bean soaking tips) as well if you’re feeling creative.

4 – Spicy Salmon Cucumber Cups by Nom Nom Paleo

Tips: If you aren’t into makin’ your own mayo, don’t go buy one of those GMO and PUFA laden mayos at the store (seriously if I could recommend a store brand, I would…but there is not healthy mayo that’s sold on the shelf yet :(…most of the oils in those mayos are rancid before they even hit the shelf). Instead, pick up a can of full fat coconut milk (this only works with the full fat can), stick it in the fridge the night before you make these and use the solidified coconut milk part to make the recipe. It’s just as delish!

5 – Stuffed Mushrooms by Tyler Florence

Tip: Keep this one #codetowellness – ified and #jerf (just eat real food) friendly by kicking the “bread crumbs”. You don’t need them at all. They don’t affect the flavor (with all of that goodness, these are delicious no matter what!). By leaving them out you turn this recipe into a fuel worthy, gut happy one. Also, keep the cheese raw or grass-fed (it’s easy to find at Whole Foods or your local farmer’s market).

6 – Spicy Buffalo Chicken [Wings] by Mark’s Daily Apple

Tips: These are delicious alone, but if you’re like me and you loooooooove to dip your wings in something creamy, then scroll back up to the Spicy Salmon Cucumber Cups recipe and use the same coconut milk swap technique listed there. Add to that a little salt, pepper, and lemon juice to taste and your favorite herb (I like cilantro). A little raw garlic is yummy in this dip as well.

7 – Black Bean Chocolate Cake Brownie by Barefood Angel

Tips: Sprinkle a little cinnamon (ceylon cinnamon i.e. “true cinnamon” is the one you want) on top of your batch to help balance blood sugar (just 1/2 tsp per day will help balance blood sugar for up to 24 hours.) Did you know balanced blood sugar is the ONLY thing that people who live be 100 have in common! So, to sum it up Eat Cinnamon = Be Invincible! Well, not quite, but it does help you live your Code to Wellness!
