Creamy Avocado Coconut Protein Smoothie

As I was going through the Code to Wellness website the other day and doing a little spring cleaning throughout the blog posts that are up, I realized that there was only one protein smoothie post.

ONLY ONE!

“What the heck! How can that be?!” were the thoughts that ran through my mind and apparently out my mouth (it was kind of hilarious…I didn’t mean to say it out load and ended up surprising my own self 😛 huge nerd moment…). It was especially odd because I feel like all I’ve been doing lately is drinking protein smoothies. I walked into my Dermatologists’ office for a routine check-up and when he offered the chance to do a Xymogen’s 6-Day-Detox I jumped at it (because, ya know, that’s kinda my thing!).

Anyways, I have a backlog of protein smoothie recipes I’ve just been itching to share with you guys. I picked out this one out from the bunch because a) it’s flipping great b) it has avocado in it c) it requires no external sweetener of any kind d) it’s a pretty minty green color e) it’s full of healthy saturated and monounsaturated fat from the coconut milk + the avocado (most smoothies only focus on the fruit and the protein content…not this one!) f) it’s not one of those watery smoothies that you look at and think, “Man…what can I add in to thicken this thing up?”, because it’s exactly how a smoothie should be – thick, creamy and full-bodied.

Let’s jump right in!

Creamy Coconut N'Oatmeal (Esp for the Gallbladder Challenged)

Coconut N’oatmeal (for the Gallbladder Challenged)

You wanna know the truth?

Fat is TOTALLY phat. You can read more about that in this post by yours truly. BUT, not all fat, despite it’s incredible health benefits, is created equal. Meaning this – even though a particular type of fat may be totally phat (i.e. awesomely nutritious and health promoting) for someone else, it just might not be for you, especially if you experience digestive issues involving the gallbladder. READ MORE

Raw Paleo Granola

Raw Bowl’a Paleo Granola

Aaaah the Raw Bowl’a Paleo Granola. Has such a nice ring to it, don’t it? Well there’s more to it than that, actually. Did you know that…

When I’m feeling like lazy bum in the morning, my #1 go-to is THIS recipe?

Why? Because this – every now and then, I get up in the morning, and I feel just sooo incredibly lazy. It’s like, I just can’t even muster the 60 seconds of effort it takes to grab a pan, turn on the stove, and dump in some coconut oil. It’s true!

Last Monday was one of those days.

TGI Cornbread Recipe

So, I recently started up a Facebook group, in which we’ve started discussing the topic of the beginning of the “holiday stress period” i.e. The period in which we fret about gaining weight from things like:

  • The extra tastes we unconsciously graze on as we stroll through the grocery store
  • The basket of holiday cookies so thoughtfully given to us by our loved ones over which we feel guilted into eating a few…which in turn (and unbeknownst to our subconscious) morphs into devouring the entire thing
  • The surge in Cortisol from stressing about keeping our sh** together and avoiding food-and-life-shaming from the crowd of (sometimes-judgmental) 20+ people for which we’re preparing to host a gigantic holiday meal & party
  • And, probably lots more…

And then, I asked my people the following:READ MORE

Fourth of July “Star-Spangled” Parfait

My ideal July 4th probably looks different than yours, being that it’s a scene straight out of my favorite movie, The Sandlot.

It’s a magical scene played out to the sound of Ray Charles’ version of “America the Beautiful” (here’s the clip) .

The main characters, nine middle school-age boys who eat, sleep and breath baseball, run through their neighborhood block-party (swiping hot dogs off of picnic tables) as they head to the sandlot for a night game.  It’s the one night of the year where the firework-speckled sky allows them each to feel “…like the big leaders under the lights of some great stadium.”

Sloth Propeller

“Sloth Propeller” Recipe – Naturally Sweet Bulletproof Style Coffee

Aaaah coffee! It is to me the smell of a very good Saturday morning (because I pretty much only drink coffee on Saturdays or sometimes Sundays).

I grew up drinking it (because, of course it’s a staple in any Colombian household!) and had my first taste when I was still a wee thing. My dad has always liked it strong topped off with a little whole milk. But me, I like it cafe con leche style: thick, creamy and sweet. But alas, that is not a health promoting option 🙁 Unless…

Unless you do it my way! Enter “Sloth Propeller”…
