Hi, I’m Delfina. I’m a Health Coach, Recipe Develop, Alternative Health Blogger, Yoga Tune Up & Movement teacher, and most recently, safe skin care fanatic too. This is the story of how I became dedicated to a mission called Beautycounter.
Like many of you, I spent years caring about what I ate and put in my body but didn’t pay much attention to what I put on my body. I cared about nutrition and eating well, but had no idea that daily, I was compromising my health by smothering toxic chemicals all over my skin- my biggest organ of all!
Luckily, things changed. Alarmed by an article about sunblocks released by the Environmental Working Group (EWG), a non-profit organization that specializes in food and cosmetic research and safety, I began paying more attention to my products. I was shocked to learn that the sunblock I’d been wearing for years, duped by strategic marketing, was one of the most toxic out there. I’d been slathering harmful poisons all over my body… and didn’t even know it! ????
I really hadn’t questioned my safety until then- like so many of us, I’d assumed products were monitored by the FDA. Err, right? Oh no no, quite the contrary…
When it comes to personal care products, there are minimal regulations- our beauty industry is self-regulated– left to do as it pleases.
This realization stunned me. Immediately, I became a researching machine, examining everything I owned.
Truth is, companies are allowed to use known toxins—ingredients that have been linked to cancer, reproductive issues, and hormone disruption—without disclosing them. The last major law passed by Congress- many decades ago- declared the word “fragrance” a trade secret…. it’s proprietary, allowing companies to put hundreds of chemicals in their “fragrance” without disclosing a single ingredient. Quite the sneaky loophole, wouldn’t you say? (See more about this HERE.)
Luckily, it’s not all doom and gloom. There are some companies doing it right!
I’m excited to share what I’ve learned with you to help you find safer alternatives. Knowledge truly is power. ♥
That’s over 75 years ago… before WWII!!
In addition to labeling fragrances “trade secrets”, this law also stated products made for salons could keep their ingredients undisclosed as well.
This number is now almost 1400.
As Europe’s list grows, the United States remains behind….
Think about what you put on your skin every day- deodorant, shampoo, mascara, chapstick, whatever it may be. How much do you actually know about them?
You’re not alone. In fact, the government hardly knows- only 10% to 15% of the 10,000 chemicals commonly found in personal care products have any safety data at all. Which means none of us really know what we’re putting on our skin- every single day- 365 days a year- for decades of our lives!
Researchers at UC Berkeley’s School of Public Health published a study in 2013 that detected lead, cadmium, chromium, aluminum, and five other metals in many popular brands of lipsticks and lip glosses found in drugstores and department stores throughout the Unites States. Wait, what?
Decades of studies indicate that serious health issues such as cancer and infertility are on the rise- not because of genetics, but because of toxins in our environment- yet still, our FDA is not regulating this?
In March of 2013, a team of women came together to form a grass-roots company that would go against the grain. Gregg Renfrew- founder, Mia Davis- previous head of the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, and Christy Coleman- celebrity makeup artist on a mission to clean things up, teamed up to bring Gregg’s dream to life. With a name of many meanings, the new company symbolized a place for better beauty products, and more importantly, one that countered current beauty standards.
On a mission to create safer products and challenge the government to make legislative changes, Beautycounter has now grown into something more. It’s a movement for change, so that no matter what products people choose to use, everyone can be safe. (See more about Beautycounter’s mission HERE.)
If you’d asked me a few years ago what I’d be doing today, I never would’ve said working with a skin care and cosmetics company. I’m a teacher- and lover of food, not a product gal.
Yet today, here I stand, passionately and proudly part of the Beautycounter team. I have found the activist in me- and I don’t see that changing. I have grown- this knowledge and passion will now forever be in me.
See more about why this company is so dear to my heart in this short video…
I don’t have time to make my own goops… and I certainly don’t know how to make mascara. I’m in my 30’s- I just need stuff that works! I want high-quality products and the assurance of safety. Previously maybe too much to ask for… not anymore.
No secrets. Beautycounter discloses everything. The team has developed a rigorous ingredient screening process, looking for data on skin irritation, carcinogenicity, reproductive toxicity, cumulative exposure and more. And they share every little bit of it. (See for yourself on their home page FAQ.)
* All products are rated 0-2 on the EWG safety rating scale. (See the EWG site HERE or download their free app, HealthyLiving, to see how your products rate!)
* Nothing is tested on animals. Ever.
* They will never use a list of 1500 known toxic ingredients in their products, including these commonly found ones listed on their Never List.
I feel confident every time I pick up my creams, cleansers, lipsticks, and shampoos. I love not having to think twice… trust is invaluable.
It’s safe to say this Charcoal Face and Body bar peaks the most consumer interest. It detoxifies and absorbs impurities in the skin without drying it out. Made with antioxidant-rich, organic green tea and hydrating organic coconut oil, it helps fight acne and smoothen skin. A great choice for any age- man, woman, or child.
The Dew Skin Tinted Moisturizer is not only super light and hydrating, but it leaves skin so soft too. AND it has SPF! Yes, the SPF 20 keeps skin protected all day long! I adore this stuff, and now won’t start my day without it… sun protection is key. ???? (For heavier coverage, try the Tint Skin foundation instead/along with.)
This is Beautycounter’s newest product. After three long years in the works, this Lengthening Mascara was just released in May ’16 as a breakthrough in the industry. Up until now, it’s been nearly impossible to create a mascara that was both safe and worked well- no smearing, fading, smudging, or clumping…. finally, we have both!
I LOVE these Lustro Face Oils. Putting oil on your face may seem counterintuitive, but our skin actually needs it. Face oils are your friend (see more here). Choose #1 for sensitive skin, #2 for maturing skin, or #3 for acne prone skin. I add a few drops to my day cream each morn, and sometimes add a little extra around my eyes while I sleep at night too.
Transition to safer. Use the EWG site or app to see where your products stand. If what you love works AND is safe, wonderful- keep using it! If not, swap to something better. ????
